More and more of modern business is online. Just like 'old-fashioned' businesses, basic tenets apply to the world of online sales. Here are some aspects to think about when starting your online business.

1. Consider your Product

Who are you selling to and how will you reach them? Just as in 'realtime' sales, each merchant must serve a specific need. What is the customer's need and how will your business serve it? There questions are paramount in determining what your site will look like, what your product line will include, and how you will successfully 'move' the product into the hands of your 'target group'. Lack of attention to this fundamental issue to will almost certainly cause problems, not profits.

2. Consider the Competition

Just because you can't see the competition (the shop next door) doesn't mean it's not there. In fact, since online business is not tied to spatial dynamics, the competition is in many ways closer to you and the competitive process can be more intense. What does it mean to consider online competition? You'll need to think about how web traffic generally navigates your site and the sites of your competitors and build a strategy around this. You might need to pay search engines or use affiliate marketing to enhance your visibility, or you might want to find relatively out-of-the-way spots on the internet to reach a different set of customers.

3. Consider your Design.

When you have successfully drawn customers to your site, you want the product to appeal to them. Think about the graphic design of your site and also your text.

These and other considerations can make or break your online business. Make sure you have a plan in hand for your online start-up. It will surely pay off further on down the road.
